Dear Dreamers, It was early last year that I came upon The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Divakaruni Banerjee. The surprising and succinct account of the Mahabharat from Draupadi’s perspective brought a new light to the told and retold story of the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Dear Dreamers, I recently discovered the Somerville Public library- a couple of months ago now and since I discovered that you can get as many  books as you like, there has been an onslaught of books. I feel like the child stuck with his hand in the cookie jar, there is always one more cookie to grab... To that end, I havent been able to write any more posts of the books I have written recently.Today I talk about the book The Palace of Illusions by Chitra divakaruni that made a great impact on me. I am one of those people who grew up watching Mahabharata on Sunday mornings.  It is a Sanskrit epic with all its intrinsic story telling and loopholes. It is a book with chariots and wars and vows and curses and love stories. It is truely epic. Usually I write about how the book, but this time Im going to talk about the author. Tracy Kidder is a literary genius..I kid you not…I realize I may have sounded like one of those people who throw the amazing and fabulous and other such superlatives around…but Tracy Kidder is truly an incredible genius. It was after reading ‘Mountains beyond Mountains’ and ‘ Strength in what Remains’ that I realize the powerful role that a writer plays in a book. Usually the author is the God of the book- he knows what has happened, what will happen and what twist of plot awaits for us. The writer is always in full control of the how the book will unfold and end… I know this makes sense for fiction , but even for non fiction, the author always has a point to prove and he proves it. Tracy Kidder on the other hand is always a part of the book, he never makes himself or his interactions with the subjects larger than life.
